Love it, Hate it, In Between?

Filed under: A Girl Like Sugar, Reviews and Interviews, My Books — Emily @ 11:16 pm

Just returned from back-to-back trips to NYC and Chicago to find a couple things have been written about my novel, A Girl Like Sugar. One’s positive, the other’s nasty. It’s amazing how many different opinions a single book can provoke.

There’s this review on the Fourth-Rate Reader blog:

Pohl-Weary’s writing is strong. She creates a thoroughly believable voice for Sugar. Sugar convincingly straddles disaffection and pain, strength and vulnerability, hipness and ordinariness. The scenes between her and her former lover are painfully real, while her encounters with a new potential love interest are familiarly awkward and tentative.

At the other end of the spectrum, the alt weekly I used to work for swiped at the novel in an unrelated review:

Emily Pohl-Weary’s A Girl Like Sugar should have been sent back for a complete rewrite - the sentence structure is so repetitive, the book is almost unreadable.
