The Return of Jezebel James

The return of Jezebel JamesAmy Sherman-Palladino, the genius creator of the Gilmore Girls, one of my all-time fav shows (seriously, it’s up there with Buffy and Flight of the Conchords) has a new show. The Return of Jezebel James is a 1/2 hour comedy about a book editor named Sarah (played by Parker Posey) who coerces her sister into carrying her baby, because it’s the one thing Sarah can’t do for herself.

People who know me will understand how excited I was to hear that the main character is played by the fab Ms. Posey, star of Party Girl. Posey makes any movie she’s ever been in at the very least watchable, regardless of how bad everyone else is (case in point the horrendous Brosnan vehicle Laws of Attraction). I made Sugar Jones, the wannabe filmmaker protagonist of first my novel A Girl Like Sugar (which, incidentally, has been optioned by producer Kerry Young to turn into a feature film), semi-obsessed with her.

Having Posey and Sherman-Palladino work together on a project is a match made in my own personal pop culture heaven. It’s geeky but true. While AS-P’s Gilmore Girls character Lorelai says that for her, heaven would include excessive amounts of coffee and some unicorns, mine would involve hanging out with those two women over soy chai lattes. Or alcoholized cider. I’m easy that way.

I’ve been waiting for months to see tonight’s premiere, because Fox kept pushing it back. They teased me, pre-strike, then stalled even longer. All the reviews I’ve read are doom and gloom. But they’re wrong! So wrong. I loved it! I know that people who don’t understand Sherman-Palladino’s brand of comedy might be confused, because it involves actual thinking–there are a lot of references to current and historical events, music, other movies, shows and books.

Plus, it’s not always possible to keep up with the dialogue, since the actors deliver lines in a mad rush. You’ve got to let it all roll over you like a waterfall and be content with absorbing some portion of it. Plus Posey’s delivery is notoriously dry, which is the beauty of her acting style, but might add to the confusion. It’s also a half-hour show, which means there’s a hell of a lot of AS-P content to fit into 22 minutes.

Oh, and there’s the non-traditional premise. Even I have to admit that’s a hard sell. But who would expect less than outrageous from AS-P? If Posey’s the queen of indie film, Palladino’s the queen of quirky, fast-paced, feminist TV. Who cares what it’s supposed to be about? What it’s going to be about is relationships between women and how they negotiate life in this crazy world, and figure out their paths.

I love that AS-P is able to include comments about people being gay and situations that are a little more twisted/mature than she could in GG, which ran on Disney’s family-friendly WB Network (now the CW). Unfortunately, rumors indicate that Fox has already fallen out of love with the show and may cancel it without even giving it a full season run. Remember cult-faves My So-Called Life or Freaks and Geeks, anyone? We may only get to see the six episodes that have already been made. Sad, sad. So sad.

  2. Okay, so it looks like the RoJJ has already been canceled. Sigh. We’ll never get to know how fab or bad it might have been…
