Teevee on My Mind

Sadly, despite a blog hiatus, I’ve got nothing earth shattering to relate other than the fact that I’m writing a lot.

I’ve been preoccupied by weird mass market media-related things like whether the sans-Amy Sherman Palladino Gilmore Girls is as good as it was before she exited the scene (it’s not–I mean seriously, the Girls would never have dropped a reference to Jarheads!). Also, I’ve been watching early 21 Jump Street eps and have decided I like the pre-Richard Grieco ones best. At the beginning of season 3, it’s losing my interest.

Just coming off a Lost binge, during which I slammed through the entire first two seasons of the show on DVD. This occurred after I attended the book launch for my pal Nikki Stafford’s new “unofficial guide” called Finding Lost. When she and my other friend Jim asked if I liked the show, I shamefully admitted I’d never seen it. I’ve been turned off by all the press it’s getting. I mean, if it’s that big, it can’t be good, right? Wrong. At times, I bristle at its pro-American stance, but the writing and casting kind of counteract that.

Last but not least is Battlestar Galactica, also originally recommended to me by Jim. I’m so into the new series. I know! I know! It’s really hard to overcome the wave of repulsion that swells up when thinking of the old Trekie-type series. Well, the new one’s great! To note: the real-world political analogies (it does the biting social critique thing that only good science fiction can do), the fact that Starbuck’s a woman, the hypothesis that human and machine can be melded to produce super beings.

FYI, I’m blaming our new digital video recorder, which makes recording shows week after week so incredibly easy, for my current TV overdosing. No commercials!

  1. Yay!! I’m so glad you’re finally watching Lost. You’ve watched the first 2 seasons in their entirety in the past 2 weeks??? I bow down to you, my queen.

Jim’s right: BSG rocks, too. I’ve just started watching season 1 when my friend lent it to me, and it’s addictive.

But worst of all is my PVR, as you say. I’m watching way, way, way too many shows right now, and I barely have room left on my PVR’s hard drive (which holds 120 hours…) and no time to watch my Battlestar DVDs. Sigh.

Maybe I should just unplug all of it and read a book.

  2. Yep, Nikki. I’ve watched both seasons! It started when I rented the first couple discs to take on a road trip (we recently bought a portable dvd player). Jess and I took our only summer vacation the day AFTER your launch… Heh.

The main issue I have with our DVR is the fact that it filled up when we went away for a week. What would happen if we were gone for longer? Yikes. Wow, I’m definitely obsessed!
